Bomb blast rocks kano

Less than 24 hours after a twin explosion killed hundreds in Kaduna, the rampaging terrorists have decided to focus on neighbouring Kano today, as fresh reports reaching NigerianEye revealed that a bomb exploded in a popular motor park in Sabon-Gari area on Kano on Thursday.
The blast ripped through the city’s central motor park, residents said, and details on the causalities are still not clear.
The police spokesperson for Kano State, Magaji Majiya, told NigerianEye that the explosion was caused by a bomb that targeted travellers.
“The blast was actually a bomb blast. The bomber hid it inside a Fridge and placed the fridge on a cart, and detonated it close to a luxurious bus,” Mr. Majiya said.
The affected bus with registration number KTT 164 XA is owned by Ifeanyi Chukwu Industrial Services, he said.
He said the bus was loading passengers heading to Port Harcourt at the time of the blast.
The bombing came a day after two explosions killed more than 40 people in neighbouring Kaduna State.
It was also the second time the Sabon Gari park would be targeted by bombers.

The attack was staged... Buhari is a liar

This attack was staged, just to gather public sympathy, and also take the tag "Bokoharam sponsor fron his head"

How can someone going to Duara in Kastina from Zaira, go through Kawo in kaduna??? I was born in Kaduna......APC & GMB I know better!!! So person when dey go badagry from Lekki, go pass through Alagbado??? Who be mumu??? This is all a stunt!!!
Two explosions ripped through parts of Kaduna in Kaduna State on Wednesday, killing at least 70 people.

The first explosion targeted a popular Islamic cleric, Dahiru Bauchi, while the second targeted a former Head of State, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

Both men escaped unhurt in the blasts that forced the state government to impose a 24-hour curfew on the city.

Scores of people were injured and over 50 cars damaged in the incidents. The state police command put the death toll at 40 while the Federal Government, through the National Information Centre, said 14 people were injured.

Two of Buhari’s bodyguards and an aide were among the wounded. His Toyota Prado jeep was also hit by a suspected bomber near the 1 Mechanised Division of the Nigerian Army in the Kawo area of Kaduna.

There were two accounts of how the bomber attacked the motorcade of Buhari, who is also one of the national leaders of the All Progressives Congress.

While one had it that the bomber, on sighting Buhari’s convoy hauled explosives at it, the second claimed that the bomber rammed his Toyota Sienna into the motorcade.

An eyewitness, who gave his name simply as Idris said, “The suicide bomber hauled explosives at the convoy of the former Head of State but one of the cars in the convoy and a Toyota Prado conveying Buhari were hit.

“He was shielded into a Toyota Sienna that took him away from the scene.”

Another witness, who did not want his name in print, said the bomber rammed his vehicle into the convoy of the general, hitting his jeep and others cars.

“In fact, a car in the convoy was badly damaged. Buhari escaped narrowly. We doubt if his security operatives escaped unhurt”.

On the busy Alkali Road in the city centre where the first bomb targeting Bauchi exploded, one of our correspondents saw body parts and damaged cars littering the area.

Bauchi had delivered a Ramadan lecture (Tafsir) at the Murtala Square and was driving through the area in an open-roofed vehicle, greeting well-wishers when his attacker struck.

Eyewitness said the lone bomber, who rode on a motorbike followed the convoy of the cleric after the lecture. He was said to have been blocked by security operatives who suspected him but he forced his way through the crowd and detonated his explosive.

Security operatives were seen conveying the wounded to a nearby hospital and the Nigerian Army Reference Hospital for treatment.

Efforts by one of our correspondents to contact Bauchi failed as he was said to have been moved to an unknown location.

Followers of the renowned cleric reacted angrily, throwing stones at security operatives and accusing them of failing to protect Nigerians.

The security forces retaliated by firing tear gas canisters.

However, state Police Commissioner, Shehu Umar, put the death toll in the first blast at 25 and 14 in the second.

Umar said, “For now, we have recorded 25 dead bodies. People had just closed from the Ramadan Tsafir led Sheik Bauchi, and we provided enough security at the Murtala Square, the venue of the Tafsir, but the bomb was planted far away from the venue, to target him through the route he was taking home.

“We are doing our best to safeguard the country, so we are appealing to the perpetrators to lay down the arms.”

•Yero orders 24-hour curfew

Governor Muktar Yero, who condemned the blasts, explained that the curfew was imposed to enable security operatives to restore normalcy to the city.

Yero, in a statement by his Director-General, Media and Public Affairs, Mallam Ahmed Mayaki, described the bomb blasts as the height of “cowardice” by those bent on creating tension in the state.

The governor said the explosions were a clear manifestation of the resolve by “agents of darkness” to soak the land with the blood of innocent people for no just cause.

He said, “Enemies of peace have visited us with their wanton destruction of human lives. These blasts, coming in the Holy Month of Ramadan are a clear indication that those behind them have no fear of God in them.”

The governor advised the people of the state to be more vigilant with happenings around them and to also avoid crowded places.

He said, “The time has come for us to eschew all our differences and confront these brazen attacks as united people.

“Those behind these attacks have no regard for whatever diversity as their victims cut across all ethnic and religious divides. It is a responsibility on all of us to unite against this common enemy.”

While commiserating with the families of the victims, the governor also enjoined the people to provide information on suspicious movements and persons within their communities.

•Buhari alleges assassination attempt

Buhari, in a statement personally signed by him, alleged an attempt to assassinate him.

He said he was on his way to Daura in Katsina State when the bomber struck at about 2.30pm.

The APC leader added that his security details were affected by the blast but “I came out unhurt.”

The statement read, “I was personally involved in a clearly targeted bomb attack today (Wednesday) at about 2:30pm on my way to Daura.

“The unfortunate event, clearly an assassination attempt came from a fast moving vehicle that made many attempts to overtake my security car, but was blocked by an escort vehicle.

“We reached the market area of Kawo where he took advantage of our slowing down and attempted to ram my car and instantly detonated the bomb which destroyed all the three cars in our convoy.

“Unfortunately, when I came out of my vehicle, I saw many dead bodies littered around. They were innocent people going about their daily business who became victims of a mass murder.

“Thank God for His mercy, I came out unhurt, but with three of my security aides sustaining minor injuries. They have since been treated in a hospital and discharged.”

The Chairman of NIC and Director-General of the National Orientation Agency, Mr. Mike Omeri, said 25 people died in the blasts and 14 injured.

Omeri said, “It (first blast) happened around 12.10pm. It was a vehicle parked among vehicles. Towards the end of the Ramadan fast, special prayers are offered by Muslims. At the end of it, while people were dispersing, the explosion occurred.

“About 25 persons have been reported dead. Fourteen others suffered different degrees of injury. They are receiving treatment. Security forces and emergency services mobilised to the area. This underscores our continuous call for citizens to be vigilant as security forces intensify efforts to stop this menace.

“As we were about to come here we learnt that another explosion occurred in Kaduna.

When asked if Boko Haram was responsible for the blasts, Omeri replied, “Whoever it is, whether it is Boko Haram or not; we know that our people are being attacked and the government is doing everything possible to stop it.

“That is the issue with insurgency. It is meant to harass citizens. It explains the heinous nature of this menace; women and children are subjected to torture through explosions. It should be condemned by all citizens and we should stand together to find a solution to it.”

Also, the Deputy Director, Public Relations at the Department State Security, Ms. Marylyn Ogar, said the bomb used in the first attack was detonated by a remote control.

She said, “Sheik Bauchi normally holds annual Ramadan prayers. His convoy missed being hit by a whisker. We will not be presumptuous by saying that he was targeted. Investigations are ongoing. If we have enough details to confirm that he was targeted, it does not change anything.

“The fact still remains that we must remain very, very vigilant. In this particular incident, the bomb was laden in a Peugeot J5 and it was remotely detonated. That is why we insist that we must be a little bit conscious of our environment.”

•Jonathan thanks God for sparing Buhari’s life

President Goodluck Jonathan however condemned the bombings and thanked God for sparing Buhari and Bauchi, who were said to be the targets.

Jonathan, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, denounced the targeting of political and religious leaders by terrorists.

He said he had directed the police and other security agencies to take all necessary actions to apprehend the perpetrators of the attacks.

The statement read, “President Jonathan condemns the bombings in Kaduna today (Wednesday) which appeared to have targeted a former Head of State,Maj.Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, and a prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi.

“The President denounces the dastardly targeting of the prominent political and religious leaders by terrorists and enemies of the nation in an odious attempt to inflame passions and exacerbate disquiet, fear, insecurity and sectional divisions in the country.

“While thanking God Almighty for sparing the lives of Gen. Buhari and Bauchi, the President extends sincere condolences to the families of those who were killed by the bomb blasts.

“President Jonathan also commiserates with all those who were injured in the twin bombings in this Holy Month of Ramadan which defy the tenets of Islam, and provide further proof that the terrorists are nothing but blood-thirsty extremists bent on undermining the unity and progress of the nation.”

•Sultan, ACF condemn blasts

The Sultan of Sokoto-led Jama’atu Nasril Islam also condemned the twin bomb blasts and called on the authorities concerned to rise to the responsibility of protecting Nigerians.

JNI, in a statement by its Secretary-General, Dr. Khalid Aliyu, advised that all hands must be on deck to stop the massacre of Nigerians by terrorists.

The statement read, “We are dazed by the news of the twin blasts in Kaduna city, which claimed the lives of many innocent Muslims.

“We therefore condemn in the strongest terms, these repeated acts of terror being unleashed on Muslims, in this blessed month of Ramadan. JNI equally sympathises with all the affected victims and also consoles the families of those who lost their lives in the unfortunate incidents. May Aljannatul Firdaus be the abode of all the deceased.

“As usual, JNI calls on all authorities concerned to be more committed to their responsibilities of protecting the lives and properties of Nigerians as no development can be achieved in an atmosphere of fear, insecurity and chaos.

“All hands must be on deck to stop this perpetual massacre of people and destruction of properties.

“Muslims should utilise the remaining days of Ramadan to complain to Allah, The Most Merciful, through vigorous supplications for relief, succour and ease against the masterminds of the nagging insecurity bedevilling our country.”

The Arewa Consultative Forum described the explosions as a national calamity and called on the Federal Government “to decisively use all legitimate means and security apparatus at its disposal to tackle the insecurity that is gradually destroying our nation.”

The ACF, in statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Muhammad Ibrahim, added that “the present insecurity situation in the country, especially in the North, has placed our people in a state of despair and helplessness, it has also crippled the socioeconomic activities of the region.”

It advised that synergy between security agencies and other organs of the society in the area of intelligence gathering and utilisation was necessary in combating terrorism in the country.

The group said, “The twin bomb blasts in Kaduna that killed hundreds of innocent people and injured many amounted to a national calamity, a disservice to humanity and a great shock to the nation, especially in this Holy month of Ramadan.”

The forum appealed to the terrorists in the country to lay down their arms and embrace dialogue.

It called on the Kaduna State Government to “swiftly investigate these wicked acts of terrorism against the people of Kaduna that have witnessed relative peace in the last two years.”

Also, members of the Buhari Vanguard said they were shocked that the blasts targeted Buhari and Bauchi.

Chief Ebola Doctor Contracts the virus - Sierra Leone

The head doctor fighting the deadly tropical virus Ebola in Sierra Leone has himself caught the disease, the government said.
The 39-year-old Sheik Umar Khan, hailed as a “national hero” by the health ministry, was leading the fight to control an outbreak that has killed 206 people in the West African country. Ebola kills up to 90 percent of those infected and there is no cure or vaccine.
Across Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, more than 600 people have died from the illness, according to the World Health Organisation, placing great strain on the health systems of some of Africa’s poorest countries.
Khan, a Sierra Leonean virologist credited with treating more than 100 Ebola victims, has been transferred to a treatment ward run by medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres, according to the statement released late on Tuesday by the president’s office.
Health Minister Miatta Kargbo called Khan a national hero and said she would “do anything and everything in my power to ensure he survives”.
Khan told Reuters in late June that he was worried about contracting Ebola. “I am afraid for my life, I must say, because I cherish my life,” he said in an interview, showing no signs of ill health at the time.
“Health workers are prone to the disease because we are the first port of call for somebody who is sickened by disease. Even with the full protective clothing you put on, you are at risk.”
Three days ago, three nurses working in the same Ebola treatment centre alongside Khan died from the disease.
The Ebola outbreak started in Guinea’s remote southeast in February and has since spread across the region. Symptoms of the highly infectious disease are diarrhea, vomiting and internal and external bleeding.

47 dead, 11 injured in Taiwan plane crash

Forty-seven people were killed and 11 were injured in Wednesday's plane crash on one of Taiwan's Penghu Islands, Taiwan's Central News Agency reported. CNA cited Taiwanese Transportation Minister Yeh Kuang-shih.
The crash of the twin-engine turboprop plane happened outside Magong Airport at about 7 p.m., CNA reported earlier.
CNN affiliate ETTV is reporting that the plane crashed into a residential building.
Witnesses described seeing homes on fire, the affiliate said.
The cause of the crash wasn't immediately known.
Some media reports said the plane was making a crash landing prompted by strong winds from Typhoon Matmo, which hit Taiwan early Wednesday, according to CNA.
The plane, an ATR 72, had taken off from Kaohsiung, Taiwan, CNA reported. The Penghu Islands are off the main Taiwanese island's west coast.
There were 54 passengers and four crew aboard the flight, said Jean Shen, the director-general of the Civil Aeronautics Administration, at a press conference.

Heavy fighting in Gaza as death too rises above 500

Fierce fighting between Israeli troops and Hamas militants continued near Gaza City on Monday as the death toll from the conflict rose above 500.
Heavy bombardment hit areas east of the city, particularly the neighborhood of Shaja'ia, where a large Israeli assault Sunday contributed to the deadliest day of the war so far.
As clashes escalated over the weekend, Hamas said it had captured an Israeli soldier -- a claim an Israeli diplomat later disputed.
With no sign of either side backing down in a conflict in which most of the victims have been civilians, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is due to arrive in Egypt on Monday to push for a cease-fire.
Speaking to CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday Kerry said that the United States supports Egypt's initiative for a truce and "will work for a fair cease-fire."
The United States has "shown our willingness to try to deal with the underlying issues," but Hamas "must step up and show a level of reasonableness," he said.
"No country, no human being, is comfortable with children being killed, with people being killed, but we're not comfortable with Israeli soldiers being killed either or with people being rocketed in Israel," Kerry said.
Kerry's hot mic moment
However, Kerry also appeared to let slip some frustration with Israeli authorities in comments caught on an open microphone in between television interviews.
After one his deputies mentioned the latest number of Palestinian casualties, Kerry was heard to say, "It's a hell of a pinpoint operation."
In a meeting late Sunday, U.N. Security Council members expressed "serious concern about the growing number of casualties," according to the body's president, Ambassador Eugene-Richard Gasana of Rwanda.
Map of the Middle EastMap of the Middle East
The members urged "an immediate cessation of hostilities" based on the cease-fire that stopped the 2012 conflict between Israel and Hamas, he said.
But as clashes continued Monday, there was no sign that either side would heed the world body's calls.
Gaza toll passes 500
The death toll climbed sharply after Israel's thunderous assault Sunday on Shaja'ia , which sent hundreds of panic-stricken people fleeing into Gaza City.
Scores of Palestinians were killed during heavy shelling of Shaja'ia, bringing the total number killed since the start of Israel's military operations against Hamas to 507, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. More than 3,000 have been wounded.
Extensive fighting continued in Shaja'ia overnight into Monday, the Israeli military said.
Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri, speaking to Al-Jazeera, said that Israel committed "a crime against humanity," and that most of those killed in Shaja'ia were women and children.
The Israeli military said it had warned residents days in advance to leave Shaja'ia, which it described as a key area that Hamas uses to launch rockets into Israel. It accused Hamas of ordering people to stay in the area.
Israel mourns soldiers
Israel said 13 soldiers were killed Sunday, bringing the total killed during the Gaza conflict to 18, in addition to two civilians. At a news conference, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed the country's "deep pain" at the loss of the soldiers.
Hamas claimed responsibility for their deaths, calling it a "heroic operation."
Among those killed were Max Steinberg, a California native, and Sean Carmeli, an IDF soldier from South Padre Island, Texas, the U.S. State Department said.
"We're doing everything we can not to harm the people of Gaza," Netanyahu said. "Hamas is doing everything they can to make sure the people of Gaza suffer."
'Nobody is safe'
But people in Gaza who spoke with CNN described a different situation.
"Nobody is safe and nobody can flee anywhere because everywhere is targeted," said Enas Sisisalem, a mother of two who lives in the al-Remal neighborhood of Gaza City. "When we hear the shelling my kids will cry."

She said she had seen people running away from Shaja'ia.
"The shelling did not stop all night or morning," Sisisalem said Sunday. "The people ran away from their houses with their clothes and kids only, barely grabbing anything with them."
The United Nations has estimated that around 70% of the Palestinian killed in Gaza have been civilians.
More than 100,000 people in Gaza have been displaced by the conflict, according to the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
Over 83,000 of them are staying in U.N. schools, an increase of more than 400% in a matter of days, according to Chris Gunness, spokesman for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees.
Israeli official denies soldier captured
Hamas' military wing said Sunday it had captured an Israeli soldier during an early morning operation. But Ron Prosor, the Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, later denied the claim.
"There's no kidnapped Israeli soldier, and those rumors are untrue," he told reporters late Sunday at the United Nations in New York.
But Israel Defense Forces spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner said Monday that the military was still looking into the matter and that clarification should come later in the day.
Abu Obeida, a spokesman for Hamas' military wing, had earlier provided the supposed soldier's name and ID, saying, "He is a prisoner, and if Zionists lie about the dead and wounded, then the fate of this soldier is their responsibility."
Gunfire and cheers erupted in Gaza on Sunday in apparent celebration of the alleged capture of the soldier, according to CNN reporters on the ground.
Hamas' claims stirred memories of militants' abduction of the Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit in 2006. He was released some five years later in exchange for more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners.
Israeli operation expands
Israel launched Operation Protective Edge in Gaza two weeks ago, saying its aim was to weaken Hamas and stop the barrages of rockets the militant group has been firing into Israel.
The operation began with more than a week of aerial bombardments. But after Hamas fighters used a tunnel dug under the border to attempt another line of attack, Netanyahu ordered the start of a ground offensive into Gaza, sending tanks and infantry into the territory.
Having originally billed the incursion as a targeted operation against Hamas' network of tunnels, the IDF said Sunday it was expanding the offensive.
It said the goal is "to strike a significant blow to Hamas' terror capabilities and to restore security and stability to Israel's residents and citizens."
Israel is still "early on in the mission," the IDF's Lerner said Sunday. "You can't erase 10,000 rockets overnight," he said of Hamas' estimated arsenal.
New tunnel attack
The IDF said it killed more than 10 militants who tried in two separate groups to get into southern Israel through tunnels on Monday.
Hamas' military wing said the infiltration attempt was ongoing, claiming its fighters had killed Israeli soldiers.
Efforts to bring an end to the fighting have so far come to nothing.
Israel accepted an Egyptian proposal for a cease-fire last week. But Hamas rejected it, saying it hadn't been consulted and wanted a broader range of issues to be addressed, including prisoner releases and Israel's restrictions on the movement of people and goods in and out of Gaza.
Subsequent talks involving Egypt, the Palestinian Authority, the United States and others have failed to yield any breakthroughs.

Boko Haram ''controls' Damboa In Borno

Nigeria's militant Islamists are in control of the key town of Damboa in north-eastern Nigeria, a local vigilante leader has told the BBC.
The vigilante force defending the town fled on Sunday, and Islamist group Boko Haram's black flag is now flying over Damboa, he said.
At least 40 people were killed when Boko Haram attacked Damboa on Friday, the vigilante leader added.
The group has been fighting since 2009 to create an Islamic state in Nigeria.
In April, it sparked international outrage by abducting more than 200 girls from their boarding school in Chibok, in Borno state, like Damboa.
The BBC's Chris Ewokor in the capital, Abuja, says when Boko Haram seized towns and villages in the past, it was driven out by the military.
However, government forces have failed to launch an offensive to recapture Damboa, he says.
'Checkpoints'
It is one of the biggest towns in Borno state and a busy trading centre for people from neighbouring villages.
Meanwhile, a military helicopter flying in Borno state's Bama area crashed after developing a technical fault, the defence ministry says.
It did not give details on casualties.
During the fighting in Damboa, some electric installations were damaged and this has left the regional capital, Maiduguri, without electricity for the past three weeks, a local resident has told the BBC.
Damboa is about 85km (53 miles) from Maiduguri, the headquarters of Boko Haram before it was driven out by government forces last year.

Castro is still Alive - Wife believes

The situation with Ghanian hiplife artiste, Castro and Janet Bandu, has caused many people to express varied opinions on the status of the artiste and his acquaintance –with some already declaring him dead and others thinking a publicity stunt is at play.

One of the important figures in Castro’s life, Mrs. Dorothy Tagoe has also expressed her opinion on the status of her husband as to whether he’s dead, alive or missing.

Mr. Nicholas Adu-Gyamfi, an Uncle to Mrs. Tagoe has disclosed to Razz Newspaper that; Dorothy and the rest of the family have the strongest belief that the artiste is still alive.
“Castro's wife and her family believe that Castro is not dead. He’s missing and we are all searching for him. We believe strongly that we will see him,” he said.

“We in Ghana who represent Mrs. Dorothy have been to Ada and we think the media can help us without concentrating on her,” he commented on the media’s attention being drawn to her.

Commenting on why Mrs. Dorothy Tagoe has not turned up in the country after Razz Newspaper’s publication last week that, she was supposed to be in Ghana; Mr. Adu-Gyamfi responded – “We know the media want news but you should also consider the situation at hand and the woman involved. It’s not easy and so if she doesn’t want to speak to the media now, we will have to respect that. When she’s ready to speak to the media, will let you know.”

He also added that, the families of Castro and Dorothy have been very collaborative in their search for the multiple, award-winning artiste.
According to him, there has been effective communication between the two families and the reasons for Dorothy’s absence in Ghana since the incident is well understood by Castro’s family.

On speculations about Castro and Dorothy having divorced or having challenges with their marriage before the incident, Mr. Adu-Gyamfi stated; “If not for this issue that has come up, I don’t think you will be interested in knowing the state of their marriage, but like I keep saying, they are still married! They have not broken up.”

The search is still on for Castro and Janet Bandu, who are said to have gone missing during a weekend rendezvous on 6th July, 2014 at Ada.
