The Federal government of Nigeria has accused
suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Sanusi Lamido, of
mischief, blackmail and irresponsibility, over his
recent allegations in the media that President Goodluck Jonathan
suspended him for revealing corruption in the nation’s oil industry.
Presidential spokesman, Reuben Abati, in a statement on Wednesday, said
the disgraced former CBN Boss’s continued allegations were in
furtherance of a selfish personal agenda, which “is most unbecoming of
someone who still holds the high office of Governor of the CBN.”
According to Abati: “The Presidency would not ordinarily have wished to
join issues with Mallam Sanusi who as CBN Governor remains an appointee
of the President, but (for) the very unacceptable manner in which
Sanusi has been misinforming the public made it imperative that this
statement be issued”.
The spokesman said Sanusi “has cynically
chosen to whip up public sympathy for himself and anger against the
Federal Government by deliberately misleading unwary Nigerians and the
international community into believing the falsehood that he is being
punished for exposing corruption.
“The Presidency wishes to
reaffirm that Mallam Sanusi’s suspension has absolutely nothing to do
with his unproven and inconsistent claim that $49.8 Billion, $12 billion
or $20 billion is missing from the national treasury”.
In the
face of the allegations, Abati assured that government was not making
any attempt to sweep them under the carpet as Jonathan has authorized
the engagement of reputable international firms for the recommended
forensic audit of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC)
accounts.
Sanusi was indicted by the CBN Audit, which he have
fraudulently misappropriated over N439Billion in 3 years. The disgraced
and suspended CBN Governor gave out about 63 unauthorised contracts,
mostly to opposition political party leaders.
Maj Gen Muhammadu
Buhari was awarded a N64billion contract and over N10billion in 2011
for his presidential campaign against President Jonathan. Mallam
El-Rufai's company received a N5billion contrac from Sanusi for the
design of N90billion CBN civic center in the Federal capital, Abuja.
After his indictment in February, 2013 and subsequent investigations
that ended in July, 2013, Mallam Sanusi choose to play a fast one on
Nigerians. He alleged that NNPC did not remit $49.8billion, later
changed the figure to $10.8b, to $12.8b and later to $20billion.
Mallam Sanusi as at this moment have not being able to state how he got his figures.
